E' disponibile per il download la beta di GeeXboX 1.2, la nuova versione del popolare software di media center che permette di trasformare un qualunque PC, anche molto vecchio, in un potente e versatile riproduttore multimediale.

Fra le (letteralmente) decine di novità presenti in questa nuova versione la più importante è senza dubbio l'introduzione di X.org.

I vantaggi di questa scelta (di default, ma è possibile tornare indietro con l'iso generator) sono molteplici:

• possibilità di funzionare alle risoluzioni widescreen HDTV
• uso dei driver di X per le maggiori schede video
• uso delle funzioni di auto-detection di X
• accelerazione hardware della riproduzione video attraverso XVideo

Non elencata nella press release, ma l'introduzione di X senza dubbio apre le porte ad una futura inclusione di un'interfaccia video più complessa (per la versione 2.0)

Personalmente, visto che la 1.1 funziona alla perfezione e che:

- TV-Out is no longer available when booting with X.Org enabled.

penso che non aggiornerò nulla, almeno fino al rilascio della versione definitiva.
