I Transformers esistono davvero? Il "mistero" di "Men of Metal".
Tempo fa, mi trovai a dover affrontare, per un lavoro di laboratorio all'università, diversi problemi di programmazione di robot autonomi, nel mio caso costruiti con i notissimi Lego Mindstorm e programmati in Java con il framework Lejos. Il risultato di quel lavoro, se vi interessa, lo potete trovare qui.
Come spesso capita in questi casi, internet si rivela una fonte preziosa di informazioni, ed appassionatomi all'argomento ho cominciato a frequentare siti dedicati alla materia.
Su uno di questi, il rispettabilissimo Linuxdevices.com (e confermato da slashdot.org) trovo un annuncio sconvolgente: un ingegnere inglese sta lavorando ad un incredibile robot antropomorfo (e bipede), autonomo (ovvero in grado di prendere decisioni nel limite del suo ambiente operativo, insomma non radiocomandato dall'uomo), alimentato da un motore a combustione interna.
Non voglio scendere subito in dettagli per non rovinarvi la sorpresa, anche se la categoria nella quale ho inserito questo articolo dovrebbe farvi presagire come andrà a finire la storia. Piuttosto voglio condividere con chi non conosce la vicenda, il piccolo lavoro di investigazione (allora non era un "caso" noto come adesso) che mi ha portato a scoprire l'evidente verità sulla faccenda.
Il tutto comincia con un allegato a numerose e prestigiose riviste americane. E' un estratto dal libro Men of Metal: Eyewitness Accounts of Humanoid Robots [Uomini di Metallo: testimonianze oculari su robot umanoidi], di prossima pubblicazione da parte di una casa editrice inglese specializzata in opere riguardanti "misteri" e "cospirazioni" (sigh...).
L'autore di questo libro, il giornalista Rowland Samuel si trovava dalle parti di Oxford quando ad un party, un conoscente gli parla di un curioso incidente accaduto ad un amico. L'uomo percorreva in macchina l'autostrada A40 tornando verso Oxford da una conferenza quando la pioggia lo sorprende. La macchina scivola via dalla carreggiata in direzione del guard rail. Sembra l'inizio di un disastro, ma non è così. Dal bosco al lato della strada compare una luce accecante emessa da una gigantesca figura indistinta che con un balzo è sulla strada, e colpisce in qualche modo l'auto del malcapitato (o fortunato?) soggetto. Quando questi trova il coraggio di riaprire gli occhi serrati nel terrore, si ritrova perfettamente in carreggiata, salvo: unico indizio dell'evento una gigantesca impronta sulla portiera dell'auto.
Il nostro buon Mr. Samuel intravede il best seller e contatta il testimone in questione, ma non pago dell'affidabilità del soggetto (apparentemente un ufo-cospirazionista) si rivolge alla polizia per verificare la veridicità dell'incidente.
Con suo grande stupore, la polizia non solo conferma l'avvenimento ma asserisce che in quella zona molte persone hanno rischiato di finire fuori strada, ma un evento "inspiegabile" le ha riportate in carreggiata. Tutte le automobili "salvate" presentavano la caratteristica impronta sulla carrozzeria.
Qui inizia il percorso investigativo del giornalista, raccontato in parte, con innegabile maestria, nell'estratto allegato alle riviste (che potete scaricare attraverso il link alla fine dell'articolo) e che condurrà Rowland Samuel sulle tracce di Colin Mayhew, un ingegnere BMW in pensione e al suo misteriosissimo sito internet.
Se stavate pensando ad una nuova identità per la Cosa dei Fantastici Quattro, Capitan Codice Stradale, che difende i piloti incapaci di guidare sul bagnato, mi spiace annunciarvi che siete "fuori strada" (l'umorismo si spreca).
Dal sito dell'Ing. Mayhew, si evince che il misterioso benefattore dei guidatori inglesi, magari annebbiati da una pinta di troppo, altro non è che un gigantesco robot antropomorfo, autonomo, costruito dall'anziano progettista sfruttando parti della nuova vettura "Mini" della BMW e programmato per essere uno strumento di miglioramento della sicurezza stradale.
A questo punto si rende necessario un inciso. L'estratto dal libro, è un piccolo capolavoro. E' scritto bene, è entusiasmante, scopre il mistero a poco a poco ed è condito di "prove" fotografiche in puro stile Hollywoodiano: le foto delle impronte sulle macchine, i rapporti della polizia, i disegni del robot fatti dalle "vittime" che combaciano con le foto dello stesso prese dal sito, spunti "drammatici" come un bimbo, anche esso testimone dell'incredibile vicenda, che rappresenta il misterioso essere con le costruzioni giocattolo, per finire con i progetti dell'ingegner Mayhew e la fotostoria della sua vita da quando era ragazzo fino alla pensione. Finisce con la cosa che tutti attendono, ovvero il link al sito in questione (che trovate come tutti gli altri in fondo a questo articolo).
Anche il sito è ben realizzato. Incredibilmente scarno, come solo certi siti di ricercatori più interessati alla sostanza che all'aspetto estetico sanno essere, ricco di filmati e di dettagli tecnici piuttosto credibili.
Come già detto il robot, che sembra un Transformer ( o Trasformer come erano noti in Italia i giocattoli) è appunto gigantesco, scenografico, completamente autonomo e alimentato da un motore a combustione interna (insomma a benzina).
Il sito presenta filmati della fase di test delle singole funzioni, prove di destrezza del braccio meccanico, il funzionamento della visione artificiale per il riconoscimento dei veicoli e tanto altro.
La mente del robot è un array di PC dotati del sistema RT-Linux (da qui la presenza della notizia su Linuxdevices) un kernel real time che permette di eseguire anche un comune kernel linux, realmente esistente e diffuso in ambito industriale. I PC, fisicamente presenti nel laboratorio dell'Ing. Mayhew comunicano con il robot via radio.
La storia di Samuel riguardo a Mayhew continua: l'ingegnere covava il sogno di costruire un robot che potesse incrementare la sicurezza stradale, già da quando lavorava alla vecchia Mini, non disponendo però di materiali necessari e fondi per il progetto. Quando la casa inglese fu assorbita dalla BMW (Mayhew compreso) la soluzione si parò davanti al vecchio scienziato: visto che era responsabile del progetto della nuova vettura perché non sovraccaricarla di tecnologia (realizzata quindi a spese BMW) per poi riutilizzarla per il suo progetto a costo pressoché nullo?
Si scopre così che il motore potentissimo delle versioni sportive fornisce un'energia che corrisponde esattamente alla quantità necessaria per far muovere un robot come quello presentato sul sito, che le sospensioni tecnologicamente all'avanguardia sono così robuste da essere riutilizzate per la struttura portante dell'umanoide. Insomma Mayhew ha creato una super-automobile al solo scopo di smontarla e costruire un super-robot.
Quindi dobbiamo aspettarci di incontrare Optimus Prime (il Commander della serie animata in Italia) che pattuglia le nostre autostrade?
I dubbi a chi possiede una seppur minima infarinatura di robotica, sorgono spontanei.
Per prima cosa è inverosimile lo scenario presentato: non esiste robot autonomo in grado di pattugliare le strade ed intervenire durante un incidente. I robot autonomi giocano a calcio, sono ottime sentinelle in complessi industriali, ma non sono ancora supereroi. Esistono realmente robot umanoidi bipedi come ad esempio il famoso Asimo della Honda. Questo robot è però elettrico, alto solo 1.20 metri, ed è considerato il più avanzato al mondo, risultato di decenni di ricerca di laboratori all'avanguardia. Cosa fa? Cammina e stringe le mani, sale le scale e spinge un carrello della spesa. Può camminare su piani inclinati, tipo una rampa di accesso ad un garage, e questa è la massima innovazione delle ultime versioni (prima poteva camminare solo in piano). Allora? Possibile che un uomo solo, usando pezzi di scarto sia riuscito a realizzare un robot alto tre metri che possa correre nei boschi? Avete presente com'è il terreno di un sottobosco?
Nulla è impossibile ma personalmente lo ritengo assolutamente improbabile.
C'è poi il discorso dell'intelligenza artificiale. Una cosa è riconoscere che una vettura è una vettura e non un tostapane, un'altra è valutare una situazione di pericolo con il solo ausilio di visione stereoscopica in tempi sufficientemente rapidi (=istantanei) per poter intervenire. Essere in grado di agire su di una vettura lanciata in corsa su di un'autostrada non è alla portata della odierna robotica.
Il sito presenta inoltre i progetti del robot, che sembrano un incrocio tra disegni infantili a mano libera e lo spaccato di Goldrake che si può trovare in rete. Certo si può obiettare che sono schizzi preliminari, ma una schermata CAD sarebbe stata più realistica.
Non si può trascurare inoltre la scelta di usare un motore a combustione interna. Questo implica, essendo il motore unico, che la potenza sia distribuita mediante un sistema idraulico o pneumatico. Considerando che gli attuali robot bipedi utilizzano decine di motori (elettrici) sembra difficile (ma ancora una volta non impossibile) immaginare una rete di tubi in pressione che corre in tutto il corpo della macchina. Inoltre il motore a benzina ha un rendimento molto variabile a seconda del numero di giri, e sempre in dipendenza del regime di rotazione genera forze e momenti (ovvero vibrazioni) non trascurabili che di certo comprometterebbero l'equilibrio. Insomma il sistema non solo dovrebbe essere in grado di riconoscere il terreno con una precisione tale da permettere al robot di correre nei boschi, ma dovrebbe compensare oltre alla elevata massa dell'umanoide in movimento, anche le vibrazioni del motore al variare della rotazione dello stesso (e nei filmati si sente chiaramente che NON è costante).
A mio avviso questo porterebbe ad un numero di variabili eccessivo per un cluster di soli sei PC "commodity", ovvero "commerciali" insomma quelli che potete trovare nei negozi e negli ipermercati.
Ma non è finita qui. La proverbiale goccia che fa traboccare il vaso, è il filmato presentato sul sito con il nome di Car Stopping nel quale il prodigioso Autorobot ferma un fuoristrada in corsa. Credo di poter affermare senza troppo timore di essere smentito, che la tecnologia attuale (compresa quella a disposizione dei Mad Scientist inglesi) non sia in grado di costruire un robot in grado di fermare con le braccia una vettura in corsa. Ancora una volta non è problema di potenze (ma potrebbe esserlo di masse) ma di equilibrio. La robotica antropomorfa è tutt'altro che uno scherzo, è difficile credere che questo attempato signore possa aver superato da solo l'intera comunità scientifica mondiale.
Insomma a questo punto, se avete avuto la pazienza di leggere fino a qui, vi chiederete quanto ci sia di vero in tutto ciò.
Purtroppo, assolutamente nulla. Nessuna delle persone citate in questo articolo esiste veramente. Non esiste nessun Rowland Samuel, nessun Colin Mayhew, nessun libro "Men of Metal" e nessun robot antropomorfo che salva i guidatori nelle vicinanze di Oxford.
Il tutto è una splendida pubblicità Viral Marketing della BMW per il lancio della Mini Cooper, trasformatasi presto in leggenda metropolitana per addetti ai lavori.
Il Viral Marketing è un nuovo tipo di pubblicità che ha grande popolarità, e trova sulla rete il suo naturale sbocco. Non prevede una vera e propria distribuzione delle informazioni, ma si presenta in modo tale da essere curiosa, divertente, oppure offre servizi in modo tale che siano gli utenti stessi a diffonderla con il passaparola. Un filmato spassoso, una storia appassionate, un gioco flash, può essere diffuso sulla rete dagli utenti in maniera rapidissima (come un virus, da cui il nome) senza spese. Se una cosa piace, la mando ad un amico, che avrà altri amici ai quali mostrarla (questa pagina è essa stessa un esempio dell'efficacia della tecnica).
Dal racconto si evince che la Mini BMW è una macchina fantascientifica, così tecnologicamente dotata che sarebbe possibile smontarla e costruire un robot del genere. Se non è buona pubblicità questa...
Il robot è solo un esempio di computer grafica e l'estratto dal libro è un ottimo romanzo breve di fantascienza (consiglio agli appassionati del genere di scaricarlo e di leggerlo perché ne vale la pena).
La leggenda è stata ulteriormente amplificata da un poveretto, che venuto a sapere del libro ha registrato il dominio, ancora libero, con il nome dell'autore ( http://www.rowlandsamuel.com/ ) nella speranza di spillargli qualche dollaro rivendendoglielo. Quando ha visto che nessuno si faceva avanti (è difficile rivendicare un nome di dominio se non esisti!) ha pensato bene di spacciarsi egli stesso per l'autore, per poi confessare il tutto non appena scoperta la realtà della faccenda. Ora chiede dei soldi per scrivere veramente il libro (mah... il PC lo ha già altrimenti non avrebbe potuto realizzare il sito, a che gli servono i soldi? Per la carta? Se vuole farlo lo scriva e basta! ^__^).
Nonostante l'ammissione della casa madre riguardo la pubblicità in questione, generazioni cresciute a "I want to believe" di X-file non accettano il rasoio di Occam, perciò non faticherete a trovare ancora oggi siti secondo i quali è tutto tragicamente vero.
Per quanto mi riguarda potete credere a quello che volete, mi permetto solo un consiglio. Non comprate la Mini esclusivamente perché sperate di vederla trasformarsi in un Autorobot. Potreste rimanere molto delusi. (e questo vale anche per la Citroen C4 ^_^)
