TA Episodio 10: Videogiochi Open Source
Accingendomi a cercare qualche bel gioco Open Source e trovandomi letteralmente sommerso da grandissimi prodotti, mi è venuta immediatamente in mente la vecchia pubblicità dello Sfornatutto, che probabilmente ricordate (Si pulisce da solo!).
Rielaborandola per l'occasione, suonerebbe più o meno così:
"Giochi Open Source? Ma sono solo puzzle, solitari..."
L'idea spesso associata all'intrattenimento "open", "libero" o anche solo gratuito è quella del "giochino". Nulla di più sbagliato!
I moderni progetti di giochi sono dei veri e propri "OpenOffice" del divertimento e hanno davvero poco da invidiare ai prodotti commerciali (considerando ovviamente la macroscopica disparità di mezzi a disposizione).
In questa prima incursione (non sarà l'ultima) nel gioco open source, mi sono sollazzato con:
FPS multiplayer basato su Quake 2 ma che ricalca da vicino il gameplay di Quake 3. Gioco solo online con avversari umani e bot, in un'atmosfera fantascientifica.
Non originale ma frenetico, stabile e davvero divertente.
Alieni decisamente bavosi, contro intrepidi marine spaziali.
Originale mix tra FPS e RTS: si combatte come in un gioco di azione 3D ma è necessario costruire infrastrutture di supporto come teletrasporti, armerie, difese o nidi, trappole assassine e "hive mind" a seconda della fazione. Basato su Quake 3, tecnicamente eccellente, il gioco catapulta l'utente in un mondo alla "Aliens" (il secondo capitolo della celebre saga cinematografica), fatto di sanguinosi agguati e di una strenua lotta per la sopravvivenza. Il gameplay cambia totalmente se si gioca con umani (lenti, ma sparano) e alieni (dei veri fulmini, corrono sui muri e sono letali nel corpo a corpo).
Se giocate con gli alieni tenete un sacchetto di carta vicino al PC, non tanto per la grande quantità di slime che gronderà dallo schermo, ma perché correre sui muri fa davvero venire il mal di mare.
RTS spagnolo di ottima fattura, con unità originali e grafica davvero accattivante. Si ispira a Warcraft 3 e presenta due fazioni: Magic e Tech users.
I primi ricordano un po' i non morti del gioco Blizzard, i secondi gli umani. E' ancora in lavorazione ma promette scintille. Colonna sonora stupefacente.
Originalissimo RTS non violento nel quale si comandano delle X di chewing gum in un mondo surreale. Non si controllano direttamente le unità ma le azioni, un po' come in Majesty. I globuli (ovvero le X) fanno gli agricoltori, i costruttori, mangiano, si allenano, vanno in piscina e a scuola e quando capita, combattono. E' quello che ha più l'aspetto del "giochino" (perché è 2D) ma non fatevi ingannare, è uno dei giochi più divertenti del lotto.

MMORPG tridimensionale ambizioso e ben realizzato. Scenari grandiosi ed affascinanti vi accompagneranno nella vostra avventura online. Le razze disponibili sono originali (ma non per tutte sono ancora pronti i modelli 3D) e la creazione del personaggio ricorda alla lontana la buonanima di Ultima (più che agire direttamente sulle statistiche vengono poste domande del tipo "Che lavoro facevano i tuoi genitori?", "In che tipo di palazzo sei nato?", "Che evento è accaduto il giorno della tua nascita?").
Ancora in forte lavorazione, ma giocabile. Farà strada.

Semplicemente il miglior remake Open Source del più bel gioco per PC di tutti i tempi*: UFO - Enemy Unknown (AKA X-COM: Ufo Defense).
E' arrivato il 3D grazie all'engine di Quake 2 e il feeling dell'originale è stato mantenuto. Adrenalina allo stato puro. E' un TBS: strategico a turni.
In avanzato stadio di lavorazione, non pochi bug, ma lo sviluppo procede in maniera speditissima (una versione al mese!).
