Guida all'installazione di modem ADSL USB con chipset Globespan su Linux Knoppix Live CD/DVD

I live CD/DVD di cui Knoppix é l'esponente più noto sono strumenti di grandissima utilità in situazioni di emergenza, ma anche il modo più sicuro per avvicinarsi a Linux, anche se si è alle prime armi.
Purtroppo Knoppix ignora completamente i modem USB ADSL, e la valutazione di un sistema operativo senza uso di internet non può essere completa.
Come sapranno gli ascoltatori del mio podcast, Tecnica Arcana, ho dovuto registrare un paio di puntate con Knoppix per un problema di hard disk, imbattendomi nella mancanza di driver per il mio modem USB ADSL Aethra Starmodem (Prima serie) con chipset GlobeSpan-Virata, il supporto al quale è fornito dai driver francesi ECI ADSL.
L'installazione di questi driver, senza usare partizioni o salvataggi permamenti é facilissima per chi ha un minimo di nozioni del sistema operativo Gnu/Linux, ma può risultare ostica ad un utente alle prime armi, che spesso ha il primo approccio con il mondo Linux proprio attraverso una distribuzione Live CD. Non mi sembra di aver trovato how-to passo passo in italiano, e così ne ho scritto uno io. Buona Lettura.

Scopo.
Fornire collegamento ad internet ad un PC funzionante con Knoppix Live CD/DVD NON INSTALLATO, mediante winmodem USB ADSL con chipset Globespan Virata supportato dai driver ECIADSL.
Note.
Non prevedendo installazione permanente, queste operazioni devono essere seguite ad ogni boot mediante Live CD/DVD.
Nel caso in cui si sia optato per installare Knoppix su disco rigido, le operazioni non dovrebbero cambiare. Se si cercano informazioni sul sito di Eciadsl é bene ricordare che Knoppix è basato su debian.
Versioni del Software.
Questo manuale è stato scritto e testato con
Knoppix Live DVD 5.0.1
Driver Usermode ECI Adsl V 0.11 per i386 pacchetto .deb.
E' probabile che il metodo descritto funzioni con futuri aggiornamenti di Knoppix versione 5 e con la versione CD.
Prerequisiti:
- Verificare che il proprio modem sia supportato da Eciadsl, cliccando qui
- Knoppix Linux: Scaricare e masterizzare la iso del Live CD/DVD Versione 5 dal sito ufficiale.
- ECI ADSL: Scaricare da FlashTux i seguenti pacchetti:
eciadsl-usermode_0.11-1_i386.deb
(o versione per AMD64 che non ho testato)

Salvare i pacchetti eciadsl sul disco windows (se disponibile, sarà accessibile anche da Linux), su un dischetto o CD.

Stampare una copia di questa guida (clicca qui per farlo ora).

Riavviare il Pc, accedere al BIOS per impostare il boot da CD/DVD (fare riferimento al manuale della scheda madre), inserire il CD/DVD con Knoppix Live CD nel drive di boot.
Passo 1 - In Italiano
Knoppix carica di default in inglese, alla prima schermata, subito dopo il boot, premere il tasto F3 sulla tastiera e digitare:
knoppix lang=it
e premere invio.
Dal momento che anche la tastiera é inizialmente in inglese, il simbolo di "=" dovrebbe essere ottenibile premendo il tasto in alto a destra con i simboli "ì" e "^".
Passo 2 - Operazioni Preliminari
Knoppix dovrebbe caricare e il desktop dell'ambiente grafico KDE dovrebbe apparire.
Alcune convenzioni:
Il "Menu K", lo si ottiene premendo il pusante con la K all'estrema sinistra della barra delle applicazioni. E' il corrispondente del menu Start di Windows.
I sottomenù del Menu K saranno così indicati:
Menu K > Sottomenu1 > Sottomenu2.
Impostazione della password di root:
Menu K > KNOPPIX > Configure > set password for root
Inserire e ridigitare una password per l'utente amministratore, ad esempio "adsltest" (più furba è meglio!)
Passo 3 - Installare i driver:
Cercare ed installare il pacchetto "eciadsl-usermode_0.11-1_i386.deb" mediante un click del mouse.
Sarà avviato Kpackage, cliccare "installa" in basso a destra, e poi ancora "installa" in basso a sinistra.
Inserire la password di root impostata al passo 2 (Es. adsltest)
Attendere che nella finestra delle operazioni compaia "RESULT=0".
Cliccare "Fatto"
Chiudere KPackage.
Passo 4 - Configurare i driver:
Menu K > KNOPPIX > Root Shell
Digitare e far seguire da invio:
cd /usr/bin
eciadsl-config-tk
Attendere la comparsa dell'interfaccia grafica.
1) Selezionare il proprio modem dalla lista
2) Inserire nome utente e password con la quale vi connettete normalmente.
Se ci fossero nel passo successivo errori di sincronizzazione:
Queste operazioni dovrebbero essere sufficienti, ma potrebbe essere necessario cambiare il file di sincronizzazione che trovate nel secondo pacchetto scaricato. Decompattatelo sul Desktop e nella casella "search .bin here" digitate:
/home/knoppix/Desktop/eciadsl-synch_bin
Provate a cambiare il file di sincronizzazione ed eseguire il passo successivo finché il modem non supera la fase di sincronizzazione.
Segnarsi il numero del file di sincronizzazione per utilizzi futuri!
Premere "Create Config" e poi "Quit"
Passo 5 - Eseguire il programma
digitare:
eciadsl-start
e premere invio.
SE NON SUPERA LA FASE DI SYNCHRONIZATION: Vedi passo 4
SE SI BLOCCA CONTATTANDO IL PROVIDER: Premere Ctrl-C e riprovare il Passo 5.
Se il problema si ripete, tornare al passo 4 e cambiare il file di sincronizzazione. I file di sincronizzazione sono una brutta bestia e sono figli dell'architettura "chiusa" dei driver Globespan. Il file di synch DEVE permettere di portare a termine la fase di sincronizzazione, ma se questo accade non é detto che le fasi successive funzionino. Quindi é bene armarsi di pazienza e provarne un altro, e appuntarsi il nome del file che funziona: lo si potrà utilizzare in futuro, almeno finchè non si cambierà modem/provider/velocità.
SE COMPARE UN ERRORE SU "Adding default route": ignorarlo.
digitare "exit", premere invio, aprire firefox e navigare! 
Note Finali:
Eventuali problemi di configurazione del driver per il proprio modem/provider non dipendono dall'uso di Knoppix, ed esulano dagli scopi di questa guida. Si prega di fare riferimento a documentazione, manuali e forum di assistenza sul sito ufficiale dei driver Eciadsl.

In linea di principio si, prelevando ovviamente il pacchetto corretto per suse. Potrebbero anche esserci delle differenze nella posizione dei file, ma nulla di insormontabile! Ciao!

synch probe mi chiede di copiare i file di sinch ma io ho knoppixlive…debbo per forza installare su hd knoppix per far testare i synch_bin?!?!?
